Window glass in your car or truck is different than the glass in your home. Cars and trucks use tempered glass in the side windows so that if the glass breaks, it shatters into little pieces and not shards of glass. If you break a side window, replacing it is easy enough, but you do have to make sure you get the right parts and have the right tools to do the job.

Getting the Right Glass

The side window glass for your car is available through most automobile glass companies but the glass is specific to the make and model of the car. While these glass companies stock many different windshields for popular cars, the side glass is often harder to find in stock.

If the glass company does not have the right glass on hand, they will have to order t and in many cases, it does not more than a few days to get the glass for your car.

Installing the Glass

When the time comes to install the side window glass in your car, the technician at the glass company will have to remove the interior door panels or side panel in the rear of a two-door car, to get to the mounting bolts and mechanism for the side window glass. If the glass is fixed or stationary glass, the trim around the window may be the only thing the tech needs to remove to replace the glass.

Removing trim pieces without breaking them can be a little tricky so it is important to have the right tools to do the job. If you damage the clips or tabs on the panels, the panel will not fit tight and will rattle when you are driving down the road.

Buying Used Glass

You may be able to buy replacement glass for your car from a salvage yard but if you do, you will need to install the glass yourself or find a shop that will work with you. Most glass shops do not want to work with used glass because it may have been stressed when it was removed from the door on car. If the glass is stressed, the likelihood that it will break during installation is much higher than if the glass is new.

If the glass company agrees to install the used glass, they will most likely not take responsibility of it breaks during the installation process so be sure you discuss that with them before the work begins.
